Characteristics of the Two Imaging Powders

Note: It is highly recommended that only Vita imaging powder be used in the All-New Powder Meister!

As describe below, the two imaging powders that are available for CEREC technique have very different physical properties. Only Vita imaging powder by Vident will give a flawless result with no "clumping" or "snowdrifting" during powder application when used in the Powder Meister.

Vita CEREC Imaging Powder by Vident

Vita powder is a mixture of titanium dioxide and zirconium oxide. Due to its physical properties, Vita imaging powder will provide optimum powder flow when used in the All-New Powder Meister. It will be noticed that when Vita imaging powder is poured out of its bottle, it will have the flow properties of flour compared to ProCad powder which flows out of the bottle much like sand would flow.

Filtering Vita CEREC imaging powder

It has become popular to filter Vita imaging powder to remove the very small lumps that are present in this powder. One very simple method to accomplis this is to place a nylon stocking over the Vita powder bottle and secure it with a rubber band as shown here.

Touch the bottle to a plaster vibrator and the filtered powder can quickly be collected in a cup.

Instead of using a nylon stocking, another alternative is to use a kerosene fuel filter shown below. A filter of this type can be obtained here.

ProCad Contrast Medium by Ivoclar Vivadent

ProCad powder is a highly dispersed silica and titanium dioxide mixture and is so flowable that it pours out of its bottle almost like you would imagine sand pouring. Unless extraordinarily small amounts of this powder are placed in the All-New Powder Meister bottle, the high flow property of this material tends to cause ProCad powder to "clump" or "snowdrift". For this reason, the use of ProCad Contrast Medium in the Powder Meister is not recommended. The other disadvantage of the ProCad powder is the tendency to be much more messy in the mouth. The high flow properties of this material allow the powder to escape beyond the area where the powdering tip is pointed. ProCad powder is also the most difficult to wash out of the mouth.
